ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE MICROSTRUCTURE AND PHASE COMPOSITION IN THE FRICTION STIR WELDED AA 2024 ALLOY

DOI: 10.17804/2410-9908.2018.5.127-139

The structure formed in thermally hardened aluminum alloys during friction stir welding is studied by optical metallography, SEM, and TEM. As a result, it has been found that the structure of the material in the stir zone is fine-grained, with the mean grain size ranging 3.5 to 5.0 μm. The presence of several types of secondary phases differing in their mean grain size, structure, distribution in the bulk of the material, and chemical composition has been revealed.
